Sunflowers, God, & Me

Have you ever paid attention to the way sunflowers adjust their positioning to always face towards the sun? I’ve found myself quite fascinated with these beauties and the way they thrive. Being my mother’s daughter, I’ve started to do more research on things, (my mom is the Queen of research) so naturally I did my own research (look out mom) on sunflowers and their habits. Don’t worry, I won't bore you with too many details, but the ones I am going to share all tie into my ramblings, I promise! Just like us, sunflowers have a circadian rhythm, and if you don’t know what that is, to water it down, it’s our sleep cycle. And just like us, sunflowers have one as well. They start off their morning facing the East where the sun rises and slowly follow it the rest of the day until the sun sets, and the sunflowers slowly position themselves back towards the East for a repeated cycle. Some researches tried to tie down some sunflowers so they wouldn’t be able to track the sunshine and found that they did not thrive nor gain as much strength. Fascinating right?! I thought so as well. Silly as it may sound, I want to be like the Sunflowers. The moment that I rise I want to reach for the “Son” and thrive through my day. But sometimes we can get tied down with the things that honestly are trivial when we think about it, which then causes our own growth to be stunted. How easy is it for us to look at our circumstances, and the things happening around us, so much so that we lose focus on the source that gives us life and helps us to grow! Sunflowers don’t have this problem, they live where they are happily content in the place they have been planted. (come on somebody!) Let me be transparent here, I am in a season where I can easily choose to let myself be tied down by disappointments in my life, dreams that have not yet come to fruition, goals that haven’t been accomplished...but at the end of the day is it worth it to worry? We aren’t promised tomorrow, and we can miss out on so many moments, but we don’t have too. I want to live. I want to embrace my life right where it’s at. I choose to stretch my hands towards the sun to feel the warmth of it’s ever constant glow. To remember that I am here in the now, to cherish each passing breath that’s been given to me. Let me always be like a Sunflower, reaching towards the one who gives me life.
